Ingredients

  • 2 x 75cl red wine bottles (such as Merlot; a better quality wine makes all of the difference).
  • 1l high-quality, cloudy apple juice
  • 115g caster Sugar
  • 1 long cinnamon stick, cut in half
  • 2 star anise
  • 3 tbsp orange Curacao, or Cointreau
  • A few (approximately 100g/4oz) frozen mulled fruits or fruits of the wood or Black Forest fruits
  • 3 small red-skinned apple rings sliced

Method

  • STEP 1In a large saucepan, combine the wine and apple juice. Add the sugar, cinnamon stick, and star anise. Stir gently until sugar is dissolved. Continue heating for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • STEP 2Just before serving, stir in the Cointreau or Curacao, then add the frozen fruits. Finally, add the apple slices.
